Professor Anlong XU, President of the Hong Kong Advanced Research Institute of Sun Yat-sen University

Professor Anlong Xu is a leading figure in the field of immunology and biomedical science, currently serving as the Dean of the Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong (2024-). Over the course of his career, he has held several key academic and administrative positions, including President of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (2013-2024), Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University (2008-2013), Dean of the School of Life Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University (2000-2008), and Director of both the State Key Laboratory of Biological Control and the National Engineering Research Center for Marine Biotechnology in the South China Sea.

Professor Xu’s research focuses on the formation of human immune diversity, with the aim on the treatment of immune-related diseases. His work has contributed significantly to the mechanistic understanding of human immune defense systems, which may potentially leaf lead to therapeutic development. He has led more than a dozen national-level research projects and has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award and multiple First Prizes in science and technology from Guangdong province. His research findings have been published in many leading international journals, including Cell, Nature, Nat Cell Biol, Cell Res, Cell Rep, EMBO J, and JCI. Professor Xu is also known for building strong interdisciplinary and translational platforms and promoting the integration of Chinese medicine with Western medicine.

Prof. Jiachi Amber Chiou is an Associate Professor in Food Science and Nutrition (FSN) and Associate Director of the Research Institute for Future Food (RiFood) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and other food innovation centres.

Prof. Jiachi Amber Chiou received her BSc and MSc training in Agricultural Chemistry, Microbiology and Biochemistry from National Taiwan University, and PhD in Food Science from Rutgers University, USA, which underpin her interdisciplinary work at the interface of microbiology, nutrition and food safety. Her research focuses on gut and breastmilk microbiota, prebiotics and probiotics, food safety, functional foods, and antimicrobial materials, supported by substantial external and industry‑linked funding as principal investigator and co‑investigator on local, national and international projects. She has contributed extensively to the microbiome and nutrition field through peer‑reviewed publications, patents in antimicrobial textile technologies, auxiliary antibiotics, functional food ingredients and multi‑centre clinical and translational studies on early‑life nutrition and metabolic health. Prof. Chiou played a key role in establishing PolyU’s molecular diagnostic capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic, translating laboratory expertise into community protection and earning team awards for service and knowledge transfer.
